What was actually directed for 176 Wellington

A Thoughtful, Transparent Approach to 176 Wellington Street

I’m asking residents to take a few minutes to read the Town’s full media release regarding the 176 Wellington Street site.

Over the past few days, I’ve received several emails suggesting that the release confirms the Town is moving forward with “just a parking lot.” That is simply not what the media release says.

In fact, the key points are very clear:

  • No decision has been made

  • No final plan has been approved

  • No RFP (Request for Proposals) has been issued

  • No formal proposals have been submitted with complete financials or implementation details

What Council has directed is responsible due diligence — financial modelling, design concepts, and feasibility work. This is the necessary groundwork to ensure that when a decision is made, it is informed, transparent, and aligned with the long-term interests of the entire community.

The concept that includes parking is exactly that — a concept. It is being used to test viability and explore potential options. It is not a final outcome, nor is it a predetermined direction.

Why Process Matters

If and when the Town proceeds to an RFP, a fairness monitor would be part of that process. This ensures that every proponent is treated equally, that the process is transparent, and that decisions are made based on complete and comparable information.

It’s important to recognize that public advocacy campaigns, coordinated email efforts, or promoting specific concepts before a formal process has even begun do not align with a fair and unbiased RFP framework. Any group wishing to participate in a future RFP should be mindful of protecting the integrity of that process.

This site is a significant public asset. It belongs to the entire community, and decisions about its future must be made through a fair, structured, and transparent process — not influenced by incomplete information or external pressure.

A Personal Note

This site is not just another property to me.

There are very real emotions attached to it. My mother received her end-of-life palliative care in that building 25 years ago. It is a place that holds deep personal meaning for me, as I know it does for many families in our community.

But decisions like this cannot be made based on emotion alone.

As difficult as that can be, emotions must be set aside when making responsible municipal decisions — especially when following a proper, transparent RFP process. Our role is to ensure that whatever comes next serves the entire community, both today and for generations to come.

Moving Forward

I encourage everyone to read the full media release before forming conclusions.

Informed conversations lead to better outcomes. Respectful dialogue, grounded in facts, is how we move forward together.

FULL STATEMENT RELEASE:

Your voice matters — and I encourage you to stay engaged as this process continues.
